Charities and Community Buildings Case Studies

Church of the Annunciation, Walsingham

The PV system for this new-build Roman Catholic church was grant funded under the Government's Major Demonstration Programme. The church is situated in the Norfolk pilgrimage village of Walsingham. Technology: Redland PV80 PV tile. System size: 10.56kWp

Portinscale Village Hall

This 5.6kWp solar PV array is formed of 33 Sharp solar panels, fitted above the hall’s slate roof. The system was funded by donations from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, the Community Sustainable Energy programme and the Lake District National Park Sustainable Development Fund.

Muslim Khatri Association, Leicester

The MKA building features both a solar PV tile array on the south facing pitched roof and a standard module array that is fixed to a bespoke steel framework on the flat roof section of the building. The association has won a number of awards, including in 2003, the Leicester environment city best demonstrator building award – due in part to the PV arrays fitted to the building.

Arnside Educational Institute

This 4.86KWp Solar PV array is formed of 30 Sharp solar modules mounted over a traditional slate roof. Established in 1873, the building serves the local Cumbrian community, offering various events, activities and room hire. The PV roof was opened by local MP Tim Farron in 2008.

Barley Village Hall

Built in 1884, this former Methodist chapel sits under Pendle Hill and has served as a village hall for the last 50 years. Sundog energy fitted 42 Sharp PV modules to the slate roof in 2007.

Wind Powered Church

Dalehead Church, Stocks in Bowland, is located away from grid electricity. Originally situated in the nearby valley it was rebuilt at its current location when the valley was flooded to create a reservoir. As part of a major renovation program, Sundog Energy installed a wind powered stand-alone system to provide electricity for the church. Technology: Proven 2.5kW wind turbine.

Lowick Village Hall

This 3.5kWp solar PV array is integrated into the traditional slate roof. The PV array was installed as part of major refurbishment works to the hall including a number of other sustainable features.

Kiveton Village Hall

Located close to Sheffield and Worksop, Kiveton Village hall incorporates a 130 solar panel PV array installed by Sundog Energy. The building also features a number of other sustainable features including a ground source heat pump and rainwater harvesting.
