I have the IEC TC82 solar PV meeting all next week. We will be mostly working on four main documents: IEC62548 – Design Requirements for Photovoltaic (PV) Arrays This new IEC standard is nearly ready for final vote and has been the subject to a great deal of scrutiny around the world. While it will …

Why Choose PV

Solar PV systems convert the light energy from the sun into electricity and so provide a truly renewable form of energy. PV systems that are grid-connected feed the electricity they generate directly into the standard electrical circuits in a building, where it is used in exactly the same way as conventionally generated power.

PV systems have no moving parts or circulating fluids and require no ongoing maintenance. Once installed, the electricity generated is almost entirely cost free and produces no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. Almost all other forms of renewable energy have moving machinery or fluids and/or require additional power to drive the system (e.g. electric pumps for solar hot water or heat pump systems). Solar PV systems should not be confused with solar hot water (solar thermal) systems which heat water directly.

Solar PV is particularly effective at saving carbon because conventionally generated electricity has a very high carbon cost. For example, mains electricity results in the emission of almost three times more carbon than is emitted as a result of an equivalent amount of energy provided by mains gas.

There are many good reasons for choosing solar PV:

  • PV is easily fitted to most buildings, retro fit or new build
  • PV is reliable and practically maintenance free
  • PV modules typically offer a 25 year performance warranty - and have a life expectancy of about 50 years
  • PV systems can benefit from generous capital grants

PV systems are simple and effective and, with grants and rising electricity prices, are now more economically attractive than ever before.

  • 15 years experience: few others can match our track record
